明長城遺址

從水洞溝當年德日進與桑志華挖掘的地點往北走一小段路，爬上階梯；眼前出現的這一道綿延不斷的土堆就是「明長城」的遺跡。

寧夏可能是中國保存歷代長城遺跡最多的地方，從秦以來，包括漢、隋、明，歷代長城在寧夏都有遺跡。明代稱長城為「邊城」，寧夏境內主要有西長城、北長城、東長城和固原內邊城。明代的長城主要是為了防禦元朝殘餘勢力和北方韃靼、瓦刺諸部的侵擾；以隋長城為基礎大規模修築長城。

明朝的東長城又稱「河東牆」，建於明朝成化八年（西元1472年），又稱為「東大邊」、「橫城大邊」。西起橫城以北一公里、黃河岸邊的黃沙嘴，往東經過水洞溝、紅山堡、清水營，過鹽池縣到陝西定邊縣鹽場堡，全長約400公里，每隔150公尺建一個墩台。長城高三丈，寬兩丈，牆頂路面非常寬闊，可行駛馬車。駐守的士兵常年在長城頂上往來，軍事物資也在長城上運輸。

成化十五年（西元1479年）寧夏巡撫張禎叔、王詢先後在牆外挖「品」字形深坑四萬多眼，以防敵騎靠近邊牆。其中紅山堡一帶的壕溝深、寬都是兩丈，所以長城也被稱為“深溝高壘”。

像這樣的城堡寧夏一共有一百五十個。古代長程的修建制度，30公里設一城，15公里設一堡，堡的轄區內還建有烽火臺，沿著交通要道或長城線路，每隔一定距離修一個烽火臺，烽火台必須能夠看見前後各兩台，這一系列的防禦設施將邊防前線與內地連接起來。

紅山堡距離水洞溝只有三公里多，占地20多公頃，駐紮有操守官一名，操守兵235人。
