建 國
建國:
(一)平定各方:
大國主之命回到出雲之國之後，在大原郡城名樋山築城(砦寨)備戰。
首先，在須佐之男之命的須賀宮附近起兵，驅逐八十神到來次(斐伊川畔)；在諸豪族被打倒後，山間部的大原、飯石、仁多等郡與海岸部全部被收服；接著平定伯耆之國(今鳥取縣西部)及因幡之國(今鳥取縣東部)；且按前約定與八上姬成婚。隨後征服播磨之國(今兵庫縣南部)；再渡海鎮定越之國(越後、越中、越前、能登之國一帶；今新潟、富山、石川、福井等縣)；並與沼河姬結婚。然後溯信濃川進出信濃之國(今長野縣)。
(二)妻子們:
大國主之命的正室須勢理姬外，尚有五位妻子，除八上姬因顧慮須勢理姬的醋勁，把兒子留下，逕返稻羽之國；其餘妻子分置各支配地要所，連同轄下的豪族，每年舊曆十月聚集出雲會議，稱神在月，參贊政務。
(三)少彥名之神:
大國主之命平定越之國後，返回出雲之國，少頃，在美保之關，遙遠的海上，白色的浪頭間，有一條極小的船靠了過來，船上搭載一位穿著蛾皮衣服的小人，經再三詢問，始稱是神產巢日之神的兒子，少彥名之神；大國主之命立刻照會高天之原之神產巢日之神釋疑，神產巢日之神確認是其最矮小的一位兒子，從其手指間掉落下去，並囑咐:''今後祢們二神，像兄弟般，協力建設鞏固出雲之國''。然而，少彥名之神在建國未完成前，卻去了海的彼岸，極遠的常世之國，令大國主之命十分憂慮! 幾乎同時，海上出現了亮光，向岸邊靠近的神，上陸後說道:''我和祢是一體的，如我被誠心祭祀，則建國一定完成，否則，很困難''；大國主之命就問祂:''在何處為宜'' ? 答曰:''在大和之國(今奈良縣)被茂密青綠所包圍的山之東側，相當適合''。這神是大和之國御諸山(櫻井市三輪町之三輪山)祭祀的神。(大國主之命本身是山自體的御神體；這神社被稱為大神神社)
據延喜式神名帳、新撰姓名錄及各地風土記片段的記載，丹波、但馬、山城、近江、大和、紀伊、上野、武藏之國(今兵庫、京都、滋賀、奈良、和歌山、群馬、埼玉之各府縣)，大國主之命及其妻子有關的傳說，或祭祀的古神社所在多有推斷，出雲族的勢力擴及這些地方及鄰近周邊。
